ABOUT JO
Empathetic Counselling Professional
Over the past three decades, I have worked as a health professional in a myriad of clinical, managerial, educational and academic roles. Through my experiences of providing sensitive care to people balancing their mental health, acute/chronic health issues and traumatic injuries, I have shaped and honed a deeply empathetic approach to therapy. My focus is to develop a collaborative therapeutic relationship with a person, to build trust, and hold a safe space. I sit with people, listening intently, without judgement, in a trusting and caring way. Together, we can work through your goals to facilitate the changes you seek.
I am interested in all areas of counselling, and I have an avid professional, academic and personal interest in autism.

APPROACH TO COUNSELLING
My work is principally influenced by narrative therapy and solution focused therapy, with an understanding that some other therapeutic tools may be integrated where they are useful to you. Being collaborative in the counselling space is valued, where I will appreciate your unique qualities, attributes and listen to what you want from counselling. Your strengths and knowledge as the person with expertise in your own life will be noticed, highlighted and honoured.
This non-pathologising approach to counselling respects you as a person, where we will draw on your already established skills and resources to enact the change you hope for.

“When I have been listened to and when I have been heard, I am able to re-perceive my world in a new way and to go on. It is astonishing how elements that seem insoluble become soluble when someone listens, how confusions that seem irremediable turn into relatively clear flowing streams when one is heard. I have deeply appreciated the times that I have experienced this sensitive, empathic, concentrated listening.”
